NAFDAC reveals consequences of consuming puff fish, warns Nigerians

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned the general public against the consumption of puff fish.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye made this know via a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Adeyeye, puff fish organs such as, liver and gonads (ovaries and testes), the skin and intestines contain potent and deadly toxin tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin, which can lead to illness and death.
Adeyeye, further disclosed that, cooking or freezing the fish wouldn’t be able to destroy the toxin.

“Restaurants and fish sellers are warned not to serve or sell this fish also known as puffer, swellfish, fugu, globefish or sea squad among other names, as this will severely endanger public health.

“Due to the potential health hazard associated with the fish, NAFDAC does not allow importation or sale of puffer fish.

“And we hereby alert the general public on dangers of consuming PUFFER FISH,” she disclosed.

She also revealed that, NAFDAC will continue to safeguard the health of the nation.
